GoDaddy Webhosting Experience
Well, I guess finding a quality webhost is the most difficult search on the web. My current webhost is good, so am not gonna move out, I’ll keep current sites on their plan. I have future plans for few other sites, I’ll host them in another host. So, after reading several rants about cheap GoDaddy shared hosting plans, I decided to test them by myself.
Go-Daddy is a popular domain seller, also a popular web-hoster. It is a cheaper hosting service too, perhaps too cheap, compared to other web-hosting services.
Well, I got, what I paid
I bought their Linux Deluxe hosting plan, 10GB disk space and 1000GB bandwidth for $6.99 monthly. They also allow to purchase a $1.95 domain for every product we purchase from them, I bought a domain. They also offered free $25 Google Adwords credits (and $50 Microsoft Adcenter credit for US publishers) for this hosting plan.
First of all, their signup process was tiresome and long, also a bit sneaky at times, coz you have to make sure each and every item, on purchase forms are stuff you’ve asked for (lookout for defaultly ticked checkboxes). I preferred to pay thru Paypal.
Then after the long deal, I had to configure account settings. After that I had to login to the Hosting Control panel. Everyone has to login to their Godaddy account thru main website first after that you have to login to Hosting control panel again. They had a crappy Hosting control panel with not much options.
I uploaded one of my current sites to test this new account, changed domain’s DNS settings …etc. Strangely, it took several hours for the domain to propagate to this new server’s IP. After that only, I noticed GoDaddy doesn’t support Htaccess and Mod_Rewrite properly, some URLs were rewritten properly, but some were not.
Eg:
Working:
Rewriterule ^tag tag.php [nc]
Not working:
Rewriterule ^tag-(.+) tag.php?p=$1 [nc]
Normally, I mod_rewrite almost all of my sites, so that’s it.
I also noticed, some other odd things. we couldn’t download raw access logs, error logs …etc. Statics were only shown for a single domain, which is your account’s root domain.
But if you are planning to host sites with some plain HTML, this is one of the best offerings, i guess. But if you’re into server-scripting and all, GoDaddy hosting is not for you.
It was a wasted experiment. But I hope the $25 Adwords credit sums it up
GoDaddy Sucks !
* web hosting search is on again, any suggestions welcome

Hey,
I am in the same situ too. This is with hostgator. I signed with I fell prey with this false prop and paid for one year..it all went well (domain+one year hosting for free??? ) But after a day I got an email saying it was valid for one month and I will need to pay for other eleven months. And I then tried hostgator, and after making all the payments, tey asked for my ideantity/passport copy along with photo copy of my CC to be faxed to them. SO I rejected them too.
Again looking for a good reliable host..

I’ve been using www.lanakhost.net for a while. But I’m not sure whether it serves your purpose. Im using a very small scale account with some 250MB disk space. What they do is to re-lease a server hosted in US. For my use it has been sufficient. But I have the feeling that the connection is massively shared (at least for personal packages which come at 2k LKR per year). But the package you have looked for at GoDaddy would cost you 1k LKR per month at lankahost

WOW, Nishanthe, Thanks
I was planning to got to Hostgator next, coz it has some rep than other bigger players of hosting bizz, but now that you have explained your experience (but sometimes I’ll try support service of Hostgator about this matter), now I have no idea, where to go next……..
@adam: Seems intresting, but not affordable
@JL: Nopes, sorry. I am into bigger stuff
@Kulendra: lol. You know what? Lankahost.com is a reseller of GoDaddy. I need a lot of space+bandwidth bro, That’s why am just looking for bigger hosts.

I came to your blog from your comment on mine.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I signed up for a one year plan of GoDaddy to host my files (free icons). But they seem don’t support DNS record, the only way to change the DNS is changing the A entry. That really sucks because the registrar doesn’t support that.
Well, I already threw $48 out of the window. They don’t support refund, cheap price, and cheapest service.
I went with bluehost, and the process was extremely smooth. I just want to host my files, and BlueHost seems to be a perfect choice (I know, their service is horrible if you host a real website, but for files and downloads, BlueHost is fine)

Hi min,
Thanks for dropping-by. I don\’t think you would have to spend a lot of resources to host files such as icons.
Anyway Godaddy for some weird reason doesnt support some standard stuff. And yeah, they dont refund, for an example recently I made a domain backorder for an expired domain registered with them qeued for deletion, backordering costed me $18.
Domain was parked by Godaddy even after 12 days grace period, so I asked for refund, negative rsponse. I though as they own the domain they might give priority for backorders from them. But their support told they cant assure they would provide priority for backorder.
Now its been around 45 days, and few days earlier i got a mail saying, they have listed the domain for auction at Tdnam domain market. Also following was quoted from that mail:
*lyk WTF ??
Am not gonna spend another penny on this as it is not worth it. Have to see what\’s gonna happen in next few days…….
