GoDaddy Webhosting Experience
Wednesday, September 19th, 2007Well, I guess finding a quality webhost is the most difficult search on the web. My current webhost is good, so am not gonna move out, I’ll keep current sites on their plan. I have future plans for few other sites, I’ll host them in another host. So, after reading several rants about cheap GoDaddy shared hosting plans, I decided to test them by myself.
Go-Daddy is a popular domain seller, also a popular web-hoster. It is a cheaper hosting service too, perhaps too cheap, compared to other web-hosting services.
Well, I got, what I paid
I bought their Linux Deluxe hosting plan, 10GB disk space and 1000GB bandwidth for $6.99 monthly. They also allow to purchase a $1.95 domain for every product we purchase from them, I bought a domain. They also offered free $25 Google Adwords credits (and $50 Microsoft Adcenter credit for US publishers) for this hosting plan.
First of all, their signup process was tiresome and long, also a bit sneaky at times, coz you have to make sure each and every item, on purchase forms are stuff you’ve asked for (lookout for defaultly ticked checkboxes). I preferred to pay thru Paypal.
Then after the long deal, I had to configure account settings. After that I had to login to the Hosting Control panel. Everyone has to login to their Godaddy account thru main website first after that you have to login to Hosting control panel again. They had a crappy Hosting control panel with not much options.
I uploaded one of my current sites to test this new account, changed domain’s DNS settings …etc. Strangely, it took several hours for the domain to propagate to this new server’s IP. After that only, I noticed GoDaddy doesn’t support Htaccess and Mod_Rewrite properly, some URLs were rewritten properly, but some were not.
Eg:
Working:
Rewriterule ^tag tag.php [nc]
Not working:
Rewriterule ^tag-(.+) tag.php?p=$1 [nc]
Normally, I mod_rewrite almost all of my sites, so that’s it.
I also noticed, some other odd things. we couldn’t download raw access logs, error logs …etc. Statics were only shown for a single domain, which is your account’s root domain.
But if you are planning to host sites with some plain HTML, this is one of the best offerings, i guess. But if you’re into server-scripting and all, GoDaddy hosting is not for you.
It was a wasted experiment. But I hope the $25 Adwords credit sums it up
GoDaddy Sucks !
* web hosting search is on again, any suggestions welcome

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, Seventh and the final book of the Harry Potter series written by J.K.Rowling, is to be released on July 21st. So young wizard Harry returns to fight ‘He who shouldn’t be named’, for the finale. Unresolved plot elements from previous books and speculations of deaths of few major charachters by Author herself has already made topcharts with pre-orders. Anyway it would be a best seller as the other books of the series.
